The Endless Summer Hydrangea can be a gorgeous plant. But in our area, hard winters lead to most Endless Summer dying fully back to the ground every year. Since Endless Summer bloom on old growth (Last years branches) this can lead to a bloomless shrub. There are workarounds such as protecting them with mulch and fierce applications of fertilizer and soil amendments to keep them blooming. However, we have heard the nickname "Endless Bummer" and can understand why homeowners have been disappointed. Of course, you many just want to try something new. Abracadabra Orb – It's not just about blooms! Okay, well maybe, but Abracadabra Orb has ruby black stems that stand out even when not in bloom. The double floret blooms add even more to the already impressive display offered by this fantastic summer bloomer.
Invincibelle Spirit 2 – We adored the first Invincibelle Spirit, but we love the second one! Now with sturdier stems and brighter pink blooms! Great summer bloomer for shady areas, matures at 3 – 4 feet tall and wide.
Jet Stream Oakleaf – This oakleaf variety (see below) has an amazing flower display with panicles of white flowers that age to raspberry red from the bottom to the top. The show keeps going with the amazing fall color when the leaves turn scarlet red and orange! Matures at 5 – 6 feet tall and 4 – 5 feet wide.
Edgy Hearts – This nifty big-leaf variety has large pinkish-red blooms that are outlined with a thin pure white border. The breathtaking blooms are held up with sturdy stems for a fantastic display on this small shrub that matures at 2-4 feet tall and wide.
L.A. Dreamin – This flowering shrub has quite the story behind it! Developed to honor Lindsey Ann after her fight with cancer, this gorgeous choice has pink and blue blooms with every shade in between without the need for aluminum sulfate. Multi-color blooms become more prevalent with age. Matures at 2 – 3 feet tall and 3 – 4 feet wide.
Let’s Dance Big Easy – This entry in the Let’s Dance series has massive blooms with white eyes in the center! The blooms can measure 8-10 inches in width! The color progression of the flowers is unique as well, going from pink/green to pink and often back to green. Matures at 2 – 3 feet tall and wide.
Let’s Dance Diva – If you’re like me and love the lace-cap Hydrangeas, you’ll love Let’s Dance Diva! Diva has massive lace-cap flowers that can measure up to a foot wide! The Let’s Dance series features some of the most reliable of all and this is one fantastic addition to the series. Matures at 3-4 feet tall and wide.
Next Generation Pistachio – The Next Generation series boast impressive double florets and fantastic colorations. Pistachio has deep red and pink florets with splashes of lime green as the florets open. A truly breathtaking flower display! Matures at 2 – 3 feet tall and 2 – 3 feet wide.
Next Generation Red Sensation – Who said all big-leaf Hydrangeas had to be pink or blue??? This entry in the Next Generation series is one of the easiest big-leaf varieties to keep red! Excellent reblooming and a small size at 3 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide.
Wedding Gown – Double white florets create a stunning display! (Image at right) No worrying about pH of your soil as the blooms will always be white and mature to pink as the season progresses! Matures at 2-3 feet tall and wide.
