Safe Spring Lawn Care Tips that Work.... and you can do yourself

Why pay big bucks to a lawn care service for mediocre results when you can do the job yourself? Not to mention, you'll use much less toxic chemicals.
Sometimes when I am walking around my neighborhood, I see one of those services out there spraying everything and I cross the street because I can smell the chemicals in every breath I take. And then I think, do you really want to walk on that and let it sink into your water supply?
But I digress.....
Safe Spring Lawn Care
All you really need is the right products and expert advice, and here at the Barn, we've got both.
I recently asked Heather to give me four bullet points on Spring Lawn Care, and what I got back is below.
She's passionate about lawn care, everyone!!
Read and learn the tips from our Lawn Care Expert, Heather.

Start with Top Dressing

Here's the thing. People like to aerate their lawn in the spring, to break up thatch. But by doing that, you're literally opening up holes in your lawn for all the weed seeds, at the exact time they are germinating. It's essentially as if you are opening the door to crabgrass.
So, we recommend aerating in the fall.
Then in the spring, apply Top Dressing instead of aerating. Without getting too nerdy and deep into the soil science, an application of Top Dressing will result in three benefits for your lawn.
1. Naturally aerate your lawn and break up thatch
2. Create a "seal" to prevent germination of weeds
3. Increase and encourage the macro nutrients in your lawn to activate and develop a robust quality

Next, Weed Beater Ultra Kills Weeds

If you are spraying for weeds this spring, you NEED to use Weed Beater Ultraweedbeaterutlra
Most herbicides like Ortho Weed-b-Gon are not effective in cool temperatures.  Weed Beater Ultra is effective EVEN in cool temperatures.  It is also the MOST effective selective herbicide on hard-to-kill creeping Charlie.  It contains four different active ingredients for a SURE KILL.  It kills weeds but NOT the lawn.

How to Fix Urine Damage in Your Lawn

Do you have salt or dog urine damage?  Or damage caused by a lot of foot traffic?  Spray the area with ULTRA Revive, a unique formulation that helps relieve the soil of excess salts and binds to the soil to aid in the uptake of water and nutrients.  It also contains enzymes and nutrients derived from seaweed and kelp meal to encourage strong root and top growth.  It will actually make your lawn more resistant to future damage and drought stress.  Available in both a ready to spray for small spots and a hose attach sprayer for large spaces.

You get what you pay for when you buy grass seed!

"Cheap" grass seed companies often add annual grasses to their mix because it is inexpensive and it germinates quickly.
The trouble is... its ANNUAL.  It will die over the winter.
If you're like me, you want your lawn to survive year after year, so start with QUALITY seed.  We carry Emerald Park Premium Grass Seed (for sun or shade) that is a mix of 100% perennial grasses and is enhanced with QUICKSTART micro nutrients.  You'll see the difference!
In my experience, lawn blankets with seeds are the dumbest product ever.
Here's why.
Netting gets caught up in your mower. They contain very low quality seed that contains mostly annual grass that will die over the winter, which I already mentioned.  Finally, you don't want the seed to grow in a blanket on TOP of the soil, you want the seed to grow IN the soil.

The Correct Way to Apply Grass Seed

  1. Hard rake the area to loosen soil
  2. Apply a 1/4-1/2 inch layer of fresh topsoil
  3. Sprinkle grass seed over the area
  4. Top with Encap Lawn Mulch

Why Encap Lawn Mulch is THE BEST way to start seed:

  • It contains a starter fertilizer that gets the seed off to a great start.
  • It contains AST Advanced Soil Technology that helps reduce soil crusting.
  • It contains polymers that become tacky when watered and help STICK the seed to the soil preventing erosion.
