In addition to evergreen, eucalyptus, spruce and pinecones you will see in homes dressed for the holidays, the fresh blooms of amaryllis and narcissus add elegance to holiday decor. The stunning depth of color beauty of the ruffled, deep red amaryllis in bloom make the perfect centerpiece and draw attention to a decorated fireplace mantel.
Bunches of paperwhites will add an even sweeter scent to your holiday party and make a sweet addition to any table setting. They can even be used as party favors~
Take a look at some of our ideas of how you can use amaryllis and paperwhites in your holiday decorating this year.
How to Force Paperwhite and Amaryllis for Christmas
The good news about forcing paperwhites and amaryllis is that it is incredibly easy. Neither bulb requires any cold time, so you can plant them right away. Just pop them into a pot and watch them grow.
We also love this project for the fun it brings to the whole family. These bulbs grow so fast, you can measure their growth daily! Use it as a fun project for little ones and a living way to count down to the holidays.
We recommend planting amaryllis and paperwhites about 6 weeks ahead of the week you would like them to bloom. In our experience, we have seen the deep burgundy amaryllis take a little longer, so keep that in mind if you opt for one of those varieties.
We have also started a couple of the amaryllis bulbs, so if you are slightly behind schedule, don't worry! Come in and choose one that is already a couple weeks along.
To make things even easier, we have bunches of paperwhites and amaryllis already planted in decorative pots and vases. Simply grab them and go; a great option for hostess gifts, teacher gifts or for use in your own home!
Amaryllis Varieties Available for Christmas at The Barn Nursery
Our garden center offers a variety of bulbs that can be forced indoors this winter and holiday season. Here are a couple of the most popular varieties you can choose from. Amaryllis bloom colors include, pink, white, red, and burgundy.
Red Lion - This is the classic red showstopper. This single bulb will produce up to 4 large, dramatic blooms at the top of the stem.
Apple Blossom - We love the apple blossom for it's pink to white "ombre" blooms and elegance.
Black Pearl - The black pearl is all about the drama, with its deep burgundy blooms that look like velvet. See it to believe it!
White Peacock - This Christmas classic features double blooms, making it an ideal addition to your holiday decor.
Visit The Barn this week for your amaryllis and paperwhites! We also have a variety of small pots, vases, and terrariums that can be purchased as the vessels for these holiday blooms.
