How to Plant Bulbs in Layers

For long lasting spring color, plant bulbs in layers in a container. This is a great way to extend your color and enjoy spring bulbs as the snow melts away all the way until it's time to plant summer annuals. We call it lasagna planting and below we outline how to create a bulb lasanga planters.

  1. Choose 3 types of bulbs. You will need an early, mid-season, and late blooming bulb.
  2. Make sure you have a large enough container! You will need a container at least 14-16" tall to plant 3 layers.
  3. Put a thin layer of gravel on the bottom. Apply first layer of potting mix and then the latest blooming bulb. Continue layering like you are making lasagna!
  4. Cover final layer with potting mix and leave in a protected area until early spring. Keep protected from a hard freeze and you will enjoy up two 3 months of blooms next spring!
